The New Research on 12-step: Implications for Treatment and Public Health
NEW – In-Person Workshop!
This workshop reviews the latest scientific evidence on 12-step mutual-help organizations (MHOs), including Alcoholics Anonymous and related programs, and their role in promoting long-term recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). Drawing on recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses, randomized trials, longitudinal studies, and economic analyses, the session will examine mechanisms of action (e.g., social network change, recovery capital, abstinence self-efficacy), comparative effectiveness relative to other professional treatments, and cost-offset benefits. Attendees will gain an updated, evidence-based understanding of how 12-step facilitation (TSF) and community-based recovery supports can be integrated into clinical care and leveraged as scalable highly cost-effective public health interventions.
John Kelly, Ph.D., ABPP, is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is the Founder and Director of the Recovery Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as Chief of the Division of Addiction Treatment and Prevention across the Mass General Brigham Department of Psychiatry.
Dr. Kelly is a past President of the American Psychological Association Society of Addiction Psychology and current President of the American Board of Addiction Psychology. He has consulted for U.S. federal agencies, international governments, the United Nations, and the World Health Organization.
He has authored over 250 publications and contributed to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health. His work focuses on addiction treatment, recovery, behavior change, and reducing stigma.
This presentation is appropriate for: clinical professionals, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and social workers.
OBJECTIVES: After this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Evaluate the Evidence Base and summarize findings from recent randomized and quasi- experimental studies comparing 12-step participation and TSF with other psychosocial interventions for SUD.
2. Describe Mechanisms of Action and key mediators through which 12-step involvement supports recovery, including changes in social networks, coping skills, and broader elements of recovery capital.
3. Apply Findings to Practice and Policy by translating current evidence into clinical and public health strategies, including systematic linkage to MHOs, integration with treatment systems, and implications for healthcare cost reduction.

Treating Trauma in Early SUD Recovery: Attuning to the Language of the Nervous System
NEW – In-Person Workshop!
Trauma is often a root driver of disordered substance use. When substances are reduced or eliminated, PTSD symptoms may intensify, making abstinence harder to maintain. Additionally, some early-recovery interventions that effectively support sobriety can unintentionally reinforce nervous system dysregulation linked to trauma, improving short-term functioning while complicating long-term healing. This training explores how trauma-informed, autonomic nervous system–attuned clinical interventions can simultaneously support sustained abstinence and reduce the ongoing effects of trauma.
Maria Kratsios, LCSW, MA is the founder of Nest Behavioral Health and a trauma therapist specializing in the treatment of severe, multifaceted trauma characterized by psychological and relational complexity, often embedded within intricate family systems. Drawing from extensive training in DBT, EMDR, CPT for PTSD, Psychodrama, and The Polyvagal Theory, she utilizes an integrative therapeutic model to address chronic nervous system dysregulation. Maria is an international speaker, workshop facilitator, and contributing author on Posttraumatic Growth for an upcoming Springer textbook on Sociometry.
This presentation is appropriate for: clinical professionals, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and social workers.
OBJECTIVES: After this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Identify the states of the autonomic nervous system implicated in SUD and PTSD.
2. Explain the impact of PTSD and developmental trauma on patterns of the autonomic nervous system and on “window of tolerance”.
3. Understand SUD and PTSD treatment through the lens of autonomic nervous system regulation and dysregulation.
4. Identify at least three principles of SUD treatment that promote autonomic nervous system stability and flexibility.
5. Identify at least three clinical interventions that simultaneously support sustained abstinence and reduce the ongoing effects of trauma.

When Meditation Just Isn't Cutting It: A Holistic & Functional Approach to Anxiety Reduction and Nervous System Regulation
NEW - 2 CE Virtual Workshop!
While we all know that meditation and breathwork can have powerful effects on anxiety reduction and nervous system regulation, what do you do when a client comes to you either in full blown panic and can’t calm down or tells you they feel worse after meditating?
In this 2 hour interactive workshop, we will dive into various tools and techniques to help your clients learn how to ground and be present in their body, especially when meditation and slow focused breathing feels ineffective.
